I’m excited to announce that at the 151st MPEG meeting in Daejeon, South Korea, the two MPEG SDL software projects developed by Hoot Works have been officially adopted by the MPEG consortium.
Software Now Available
Both projects are now hosted and maintained on MPEG’s official GitHub account:
MPEG SDL Parser
https://github.com/MPEGGroup/mpeg-sdl-parser
MPEG SDL Editor
https://github.com/MPEGGroup/mpeg-sdl-editor
The browser-based editor is also live and accessible at:

Background
These tools directly support the recently published ISO/IEC 14496-34 Syntactic Description Language standard, providing developers and standards authors with practical software for working with SDL syntax definitions.
Development Status
While this adoption marks a significant milestone, development continues actively. The current focus includes:
- Resolving several known bugs and stability issues
- Implementing planned improvements and feature enhancements
- Ensuring full conformance with the SDL specification
Looking Forward
The overarching goal is to achieve complete conformance and feature convergence during the development cycle of the 2nd edition of ISO/IEC 14496-34. This adoption by MPEG ensures the software will continue to evolve alongside the standard itself, providing a robust foundation for SDL implementation across the multimedia standards ecosystem.
