There has been steady progress on both the MPEG SDL parser and editor implementation and its alignment with the evolving specification.
I’m pleased to share that new versions of both the parser and the editor have now been released, introducing significant improvements in capability, usability, and standards compliance.
Semantic Analysis
The latest release of the parser (v4.0.0) marks an important step forward with the introduction of a new API dedicated to semantic analysis. This addition goes beyond syntactic validation and enables a deeper understanding of SDL documents by identifying semantic inconsistencies, invalid constructs, and logical issues within specifications.
This new analyser API has been designed with extensibility in mind, allowing it to evolve alongside the specification and support increasingly sophisticated validation workflows.
Building on the parser enhancements, version 1.3.0 of the editor integrates the new semantic analysis API. As a result, users can now see semantic errors and warnings directly within the editing environment.
The editor remains online and serves as a lightweight platform for working with MPEG SDL. The goal is to make SDL documents easier to develop, validate, and maintain.
Edition 1: Full Alignment
With these updates, both the parser and editor now fully implement and align with the syntax and semantics defined in Edition 1 of the MPEG SDL specification.
Edition 2: Looking Ahead
With Edition 1 now fully supported, the focus shifts back to the ongoing work on Edition 2 of the specification. My primary objectives now are:
- Ensuring that Edition 2 is robust and fit for purpose, particularly in enabling full and correct alignment with the ISOBMFF standard.
- Expanding flexibility so that MPEG SDL can be effectively applied to a broader range of bitstream standards beyond its initial scope.
- Continuing to evolve the parser and editor in parallel, so that by the time Edition 2 is finalized, the tooling will already provide full support for it.
As before, the development of the specification and the tooling will remain closely coupled, ensuring that practical implementation informs the standard, and vice versa.
